By Alex StedmanUpdated: Jul 13, 2023 3:11 pmPosted: Jul 12, 2023 10:20 pmGex Trilogy – a collection of Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko – is officially coming to modern consoles, Limited Run Games announced during a livestream today. The snarky lil gecko will be hitting the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The stream didn’t announce a release date or show off any gameplay, but it did note that it’s being remastered with the Carbon Engine.LoadingPlayGex was first released all the way back in 1995 for the EDO and later ported onto the original PlayStation, the Sega Saturn, and PC. It spawned sequels in 1998 and 1999, but publisher Square Enix hasn’t released any new entries since.Fans have long hoped for a return, though. The games were heavily inspired by American television, and the wise-cracking character nabbed some solid names for voicework. Comedian Dana Gould voiced Gex in the North American edition, actors Leslie Phillips and Danny John-Jules were in the UK edition, and Mitsuo Senda voiced him for the Japanese release of the second game.IGN gave Gex a 6/10, and praised Gould’s voicework in particular, writing “usually, wise-cracking voice overs suck, but here it really does work.”Limited Run Games announced a slew of other reveals during today’s livestream as well, including a remaster of the original Clock Tower.Alex Stedman is a Senior News Editor with IGN, overseeing entertainment reporting. Gex Trilogy Collection Announced For Nintendo Switch

Revealed during the Limited Run Games Showcase

Way back in 2021, Square Enix was spotted filing a trademark for the forgotten '90s platforming mascot Gex. Now, today during the Limited Run Games Showcase for 2023, dreams have come true, with the publisher announcing the return of the anthropomorphic gecko. It's not one or two, but three games in a trilogy collection for the Switch and multiple other platforms.

It's tail time. #GexIsBackGEX returns through the science of the Carbon Engine in GEX Trilogy. We'll have more details to share in the future #LRG3 pic.twitter.com/EnQKB9dXAy— Limited Run Games (@LimitedRunGames) July 12, 2023

This collection will include Gex (1995), Gex: Enter the Gecko (1998), and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko (1999) and is running on Limited Run's Carbon Engine - "a development tool that allows legacy content to be ported to modern platforms". There's no release date, details, or price yet, but when we get an update we'll let you know.

As previously mentioned in our trademark post, the Gex games were originally developed by Crystal Dynamics - the team better known in recent times for the Tomb Raider series and Marvel's Avengers. In the 1990s, Gex games were available back in the day on Nintendo platforms like N64 and Game Boy Color.

Yea this is the highlight for sure! Loved these games on N64 at the time.

Just wish it wasn’t Limited Run but hey it means digital releases too.

14

2Shepdawg1Wed 12th Jul 2023

Oh hell yeah! We’re gonna turn this Gex Night into a Gex Year!

14

3Vyacheslav333Wed 12th Jul 2023

Well... After looking at all these announcements made by LGR, I have one good question – what happened to Plumbers Don't Wear Ties Remastered?

2

4catsnpizzasWed 12th Jul 2023

@Vyacheslav333 They announced that it's out in September.

5

5TYRANACLESWed 12th Jul 2023

So are some of these releases showcased only digital as well via the carbon engine? I haven’t seen that this collection or the tomba one will be getting a physical release. It’d be so cool to have these.

6samuelvictorWed 12th Jul 2023

@Vyacheslav333 You obviously didn't watch the showcase! there's plenty more stuff that was covered that Nintendolife hasn't made an article about yet. It really was quite packed, some big surprises including pretty big Nintendo news...

Man Gex was awesome back in the day. Not sure it would hold up too well now but I guess we'll see.

4

8AurumonadoWed 12th Jul 2023

Castlevania Advance collection too.

0

9Vyacheslav333Wed 12th Jul 2023

@catsnpizzas Oh, thanks for the info!

0

10Vyacheslav333Wed 12th Jul 2023

@samuelvictor Yeah... I was still thinking that they are only publishing games on physical media, not the games themselves... Thanks for the links!

11FishySWed 12th Jul 2023

I have been wanting to save money on my car insurance.

I've never played this series and they look pretty fun, so I would be interested in trying them.

6

12samuelvictorWed 12th Jul 2023

Notably, Carbon Engine doesn't support N64 yet (nor 3do or Saturn) so the games on this collection will probably be the Playstation versions.

"a development tool that allows legacy content to be ported to modern platforms" - its a collection of emulators for multiple systems, with an overlay to easily interface with controllers and achievement systems for different consoles. Calling it an "Engine" is marketing speak, its a frontend for emulators.

Thats not to downplay it at all, its an impressive system that they've developed that will streamline releasing roms of old games / homebrew for consoles. Also, I think some or maybe all of the emulators they've developed are in house, or at least custom tweaks - I know MVG worked on the Gameboy core at least? So that's impressive too. But calling games released using this system "ports" feels a bit much.

@Vyacheslav333 No worries! Yeah I know Limited Run get some flack from people and I understand why, but they really are stepping up and doing some amazing work in preserving stuff and even bringing unreleased and unfinished stuff back from the dead that otherwise would never have gotten a release. I was really amazed by some of the stuff in the showcase.

14

13MSaturnWed 12th Jul 2023

Very thrilled about this. These are B-tier platformers but I have a lot of nostalgia for them, especially the first one. I literally was just thinking yesterday about how great it would be for these games to be rereleased.

5

14FizzaWed 12th Jul 2023

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance continues to age like fine wine.

4

15Vyacheslav333Wed 12th Jul 2023

@samuelvictor Hmm... What is Carbon Engine?

0

16Vyacheslav333Wed 12th Jul 2023

@Fizza Not really. Omission of dual audio option support sucks. Raiden's English voice sounds disgusting to my ears.

1

17samuelvictorWed 12th Jul 2023

@Vyacheslav333 Fancy marketing speak for "Limited Run has made / licensed some emulators that they are going to be using to release old games on new hardware".

So far, they only support Playstation 1, plus:

NES/Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, Game Boy, GBC, GBA

Genesis/Mega Drive, Mega CD, Master System, Game Gear

4

18Vyacheslav333Wed 12th Jul 2023

@samuelvictor So... That's some kind of commercial emulator, then... Okay. Thanks for the reply!

2

19samuelvictorWed 12th Jul 2023

@Vyacheslav333 Yes exactly. I think calling it an "engine" is silly as it gives the impression they are porting the original code somehow, rather than just emulating roms / isos. However, from what I've seen, the emulation is excellent quality.

4

20Vyacheslav333Wed 12th Jul 2023

@samuelvictor Mm. Understand. Well, as long as emulation's/games' work seems to be excellent, I'm fine with it.

2

21LevantineThu 13th Jul 2023

The true switch swan song is finally here and I'm totally ready to Gex it up. It's Gexin' time.

4

I got my N64 very late in the game. When I got it I had two games for almost a full year, Goldeneye and Gex 64. I am so excited for this comeback

2

Oh wow, yeah that's a blast from the past. Count me in! Just hope they'll release it digitally. Next up: Chameleon Twist, please!

4

29antster1983Thu 13th Jul 2023

@Vyacheslav333 They were searching for me... for you...Oh we gotta keep that in the script!

0

30arnoldfranklinThu 13th Jul 2023

What!? Another older platforming mascot coming back in some way. Yes

Anyways, will this be released digitally at all?

3

31duffmmannThu 13th Jul 2023

Gex was an underrated gem of a series. Kinda crazy it hasn't re-emerged with a new entry yet in recent years. But I'll absolutely take a collection of the 3. Though, I feel like it should also include both of the GBC entries, as they were quite different from their 3D counterparts.

5

32MysteryCupofJoeThu 13th Jul 2023

Dunkey is going to lose his mind.

6

33SnatcherThu 13th Jul 2023

Oh my gosh yes! Never played a single, game, but always wanted too!

3

34Vyacheslav333Thu 13th Jul 2023

@antster1983 What are you talking about?

0

35SerpenterrorThu 13th Jul 2023

Yes can't wait to get back to Deep Cover Gecko.

2

36ArcadianLegend99Thu 13th Jul 2023

Yo, forget Gex, apparently TOMBA was announced during the same showcase?!

0

37OctoAmbushThu 13th Jul 2023

Is that a gun? No. It's Gex.

4

38GreatluigiThu 13th Jul 2023

I should definitely give this a try.Platformers are one of my favorite genres.

2

39LizukaThu 13th Jul 2023

Gex might be kind of worth revisiting but the vastly bigger priority for me is Tomba.

2

40IronMan30Thu 13th Jul 2023

It's the trilogy no one asked for!

2

41Dr_CorndogThu 13th Jul 2023

@Lizuka Aw man, you just made me realize how much I'd love a Tomba! collection on Switch.

0

42DpishereThu 13th Jul 2023

This is pretty fantastic. These games are classics and I feel like not that many people know about them. Very excited about this.

2

43NintendoBMAThu 13th Jul 2023

Wow…what a surprising announcement! Remembered having fun playing this game on the Panasonic 3DO system. I get very excited when it comes to retro game collections.

3

44Ryu_NiiyamaThu 13th Jul 2023

Love seeing more retro collections getting announced.

1

45DarkScythe13Thu 13th Jul 2023

I have a soft spot for the first game as i had it on PC. Ill be it mainly for that tbh. Dunno about the sequels. The original relied on passwords to continue so will be interesting to see if they implement a save function.

2

46SelimThu 13th Jul 2023

This old N64 game. İ have not played this 1.

1

47Antraxx777Thu 13th Jul 2023

@MysteryCupofJoeI mean he musta asploded

2

48shonenjump86Thu 13th Jul 2023

I played the first game many years ago on the PlayStation. I honestly can’t remember if I actually liked it.

0

49KryptoniteKrunchThu 13th Jul 2023

This is pretty cool. These games might not have been amazing, but still fun to play and Gex's one liners were funny.

1

50Sisilly_GThu 13th Jul 2023

@arnoldfranklin : It inevitably will. The digital versions of LRG titles usually release at around the time that the physical copies start shipping.

1

51Sisilly_GThu 13th Jul 2023

Throw in the GBC ROMs and I'm in.

1

52avocadopearThu 13th Jul 2023

10,000 Gecs already came out though

53epicgamnerThu 13th Jul 2023

jeb jab off the mfing ***** rn

0

54tofuman86Thu 13th Jul 2023

Oh...mistakes were made LRG = no EU phys. release / overpriced import & customs fees ... so annoying

0

55ZisssouThu 13th Jul 2023

I have a vague suspicion that 80% of people who have commented on here weren't even born when this was originally released, and that a YouTuber has made you interested in it. It really was a pretty bang average game for the time. Save your money.

1

56Nikki_boagreisThu 13th Jul 2023

Never played this but they look fun, will probably check it out eventually.

0

57JustaguestThu 13th Jul 2023

this and Croc being remade is the best gaming news Ive received in a awhile.

1

58MaxzThu 13th Jul 2023

This reminds me of eating jellied whale at Douglas Filibuster’s house.

2

59pjzxThu 13th Jul 2023

Limited run ☹️At least ill be able to get it digitally then

0

60dkxcaliburThu 13th Jul 2023

No thank you! My nostalgia must be different then everyone else's. I thought the Gex games were terrible when they originally came out. I highly doubt they'll be any better now that it's been 25+ years.

0

61JohnnyMindThu 13th Jul 2023

I only saw GBA Shantae announced yesterday, nice to see also this as I've heard buy never played this series, will eventually do so if this comes digitally to Switch, too!

0

62Grail_QuestThu 13th Jul 2023

GEX!!! F-I-N-A-L-L-Y!!! It's about time the gecko gets some love after all his lesser 3D platformer contemporaries have made comebacks over the past few years. A return of Gex has been my top gaming wish for awhile now. This is great! Now if only we could get Toys for Bob to do a true Gex 4. Oh yeah, it's tail time!!!

0

63SambucThu 13th Jul 2023

Gex is my favorite game on the 3DO!

1

64Gex5exThu 13th Jul 2023

@Levantine I can't wait to have Gex with myself!

1

65antster1983Thu 13th Jul 2023

@Vyacheslav333 You don't get the reference? Of a game you mentioned?Ahh, never mind. I was very drunk when I wrote that original comment anyway. Sounded funnier in my head. Much like Plumbers Don't Wear Ties sounded funnier in that game's writers' heads.

0

66Vyacheslav333Thu 13th Jul 2023

@antster1983 Ah... Understood. Well, I've only watched a AVGN review years ago, so, I don't remember any quotes from the game.

0

67ElitepatriotFri 14th Jul 2023

I hope one of these is gex with that Godzilla fight

0

68piecezFri 14th Jul 2023

the announcement was a fail to me, they gave the impression it was going to be goldeneye 007, only for it to be gex, epic fail and bitter disappointment.

0

69duffmmannFri 14th Jul 2023

@dkxcalibur to reach their own. But man, the 3D entries especially, stand out as top tier early collect-a-thon 3D platformers to me. I mean, no they weren't Mario 64 of course, but I would put them just below Banjo Kazooie. If you truly immersed yourself in those games there genuinely was a lot to love

1

70PinderSchlossFri 14th Jul 2023

This is one of those games where I played the demo from PS magazine about a 100 times, but never even found the full game in stores.

0

71RadioShadowFri 14th Jul 2023

I wonder if they would let us choose which English voices to use? The PAL versions have different voice actors for Gex, with Leslie Phillips voicing Gex in 2. He nailed it, compared to Dana Gould.I suspect they would just stick with Dana Gould, which would suck to be honest.

MightyPork's GEX

a GPIO header for your PC

GEX

GEX (“GPIO Expander”) is a open-source software and hardware platform built for STM32 microcontrollers that brings the Raspberry Pi-like GPIO header to the PC. The header functions as a set of GPIO pins, but the microcontroller’s peripoheral blocks may also be used for higher-level functions, like digital buses (SPI, I2C, or USART), analog signal acquisition, waveform generation, PWM generation and measurement, frequency measurement, and more.

GEX was developed for MightyPork’s Master’s Thesis (submitted in May, 2018) and remains in active development to support more hardware platforms and improve its functionality.

The hardware modules developed for GEX are not currently available for sale, but I’m working on making it happen at some point. The complete Altium projects, as well as exported gerbers, are free to download and e.g. order from OSHPark.

Features

Probably everyone working with embedded electronics had, at some point, enough of writing single-purpose firmwares just to try something out. GEX is not the first and certainly not the last universal tool developed to make this easier. So, what sets it aside?

Here are some key points:

Python and C library (MATLAB with the Python integration)

LibUSB or Virtual COM port access

Hardware UART or wireless connection instead of USB

Cross-platform support thanks to PyUSB and PySerial

Well documented protocol (see the thesis)

Microsecond-accurate asynchronous event timestamps (e.g. pin change detection)

DFU firmware upload

Virtual FAT16 file system (mass storage) with INI config files (appears as a USB flash disk)

FreeRTOS core

Wide range of supported protocols, buses and features

SPI

I2C

UART, USART

1-Wire

NeoPixel

Touch sensing

ADC with oscilloscope-like features

DAC with DDS waveform synthesis

PWM generation

Frequency, pulse, and duty cycle measurement

Pulse counting

Raw GPIO input, output

GPIO pulse output

GPIO pin change events

GEX is powerful, but also large and it needs more testing before it can be declared “finished”. It is currently in version 1.0.0 (as of the thesis submission), but it should be still considered beta.

Hardware Platforms

The currently used hardware platform is STM32F072

STM32F103 (bluepill) was used early in the development for testing, and I want to re-add support later, as this is currently the cheapest way to deploy GEX

GEX can also be used with the STM32F072 Discovery development board.

Other platforms may be added in the future. I also want to explore the possibility of implementing GEX on the ESP32, which would certainly be very exciting. As the project is open-source, feel free to try porting it to anything else as well.
